"Why are the amounts on the form different from the amounts I was expecting?"
1. You might be expecting to see the amount you paid, but the form lists the amount you were charged. As noted on the form, colleges have the option to fill either Box 1 (Payments received during the calendar year) or Box 2 (Charges applied to the account during the calendar year). Touro College only fills Box 2.
2. You might be expecting the form to include charges which are included on the 1098-T for a different year. The 1098-T only includes charges which were applied to your student account during the calendar year. For example, if you registered for Spring 2017 (and received charges) during the Fall of 2016, then those charges will appear on the 2016 1098-T. If Box 7 is checked, then the 1098-T form includes charges which were applied for a term which begins the following calendar year.
1. The 1098-T is an informational document only. The burden of proof in an audit falls on the taxpayer, meaning that if information about payments is requested, you will need to refer to your own financial records.
2. Your 1098T may not be available until the beginning of February. If you attempt to access the document before February, and this is the first 1098T you are receiving from Touro, then you may receive an error message.
