Touro GSE Teacher Candidate FAQ Sheet (Blackboard Users)

What is Chalk & Wire?

Chalk & Wire is a secure online system for creation and assessment of creative electronic portfolios using a wide variety of media. Chalk & Wire is fully integrated with Blackboard, and you will use Chalk & Wire to complete key assignments, build your program ePortfolio, your edTPA portfolio, keep track of teaching hours, and much, much more.

How much will Chalk & Wire cost?

All matriculated teacher candidates at Touro GSE will be charged a one-time Chalk & Wire fee of $100. This fee will give you 5 years access to the Chalk & Wire ePortfolio and assessment system. After 5 years you will not be able to upload or edit additional files, but you can still access your account and historic artifacts.

What are the benefits of Chalk & Wire?

You can make unlimited ePortfolios, for career and other purposes, and share them with anyone in the world, including family and friends, using email or social media. Touro GSE faculty will be able to provide rich feedback on your key assignments. Storage is unlimited, secure and private, and your documents and media can be accessed from ANY device, since video and audio are compressed into streaming media.

Why is Chalk & Wire required?

Chalk & Wire will be used to assess key assignments that show your development as a teacher candidate. The New York State Department of Education requires all accredited education programs to keep records of individual candidates’ performance and progress, based on National and State standards. The Chalk & Wire ePortfolio assessments will document your performance on key assignments aligned with these standards.

How does Chalk and Wire work?

Chalk and Wire is connected to Blackboard. When a key assignment in a course is completed, you will upload this assignment through Blackboard into Chalk & Wire. The instructor will evaluate your assignment using a rubric, and you will receive an emailed link to view the assessment and commentary. Grades are pushed directly back to Blackboard. All key assignments will be submitted and assessed through Chalk and

Wire via Blackboard. At the end of your program you will have a complete ePortfolio of key assignments that document your professional growth.

How will I learn to use Chalk & Wire?

Touro GSE faculty will provide training before your first key assignment is due. Detailed instructions are provided within Blackboard for each key assignment. There are also further instructions and webinars on the Chalk & Wire website.

How do I log into Chalk & Wire?

There are two ways for matriculated teacher candidates to access Chalk & Wire (non-matrics do not have access):

1) Candidates taking courses with key assessments will access Chalk & Wire directly through Blackboard (by selecting the key assignment in Blackboard). The first time you may be asked for your email and the password that was sent from Key assignments MUST be accessed through Blackboard so grades can be pushed back to Blackboard.
